FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers about MOT

A standard on-the-spot fine of £100 must be paid when you are caught. This amount can however be as high as £1,000 as a penalty for driving without an MOT.Dangerous or unroadworthy vehicles can incur fines of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points will be added to your driver’s license. This could result in a driving ban of up to 2 years

Not getting your car insured before an MOT does not violate any laws. However, many insurance companies void the policy if you don’t have a valid MOT.Except for SORN’d cars, every car must hold updated insurance.

With computerised motorway camera systems, the police can check MOT details of all vehicles in  DVSA’s database. If the car does not have a valid MOT the police are alerted. There are ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras purposely for the detection of cars that are at high speed. The system is also able to give prompts to the police about the location of vehicles that are connected to unlawful activities

You are given  10 working days to repair your car and then bring it in for a partial retest. If you send your car to a different test centre, you may be charged for the MOT retest. If you entrust us with resolving your vehicle faults before the retest, you will get a discount on your price quotation. On the other hand, if you prefer to do your car repairs at a different place, it must always meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness. A vehicle that has failed its MOT due to extreme defects is not allowed by law to be used on the road.

Your MOT is valid until midnight of its expiry thus you are not supposed to drive after midnight (on the day of expiry). One must note that driving an unsafe vehicle anywhere can incur huge fines for driving damaged cars. A maximum of one month is given to drivers to test their cars r before their current MO expires. This gives them enough time to resolve all issues on the car so as to pass their MOT.

To drive abroad, you are expected to hold a valid MOT in the same way as in the UK. The only acceptable place to MOT is in the UK. Make sure your MOT is updated before you go abroad if you intend to travel. It is not lawful even abroad to drive without an MOT certificate or road tax. You can be fined for breaking this law and have your vehicle shipped back for testing

An important part of the MOT emissions test is the oil level check. The engine oil level is not a contributor to a failed test but it is essential to the proper operation of other elements that depend on engine oil. Our qualified MOT testers may advise you on various precautions to help you take care of low oil or other fluid levels.

Due to the introduction of technology, all MOT information is managed digitally and held online by the DVSA. Even though some garages and MOT test centres still supply hard copies, all this information can be accessed in the government database.

You can look up your car insurance online as well.

You are guaranteed a pass on your MOT if your spare wheels are of the same construction as your regular ones. The MOT test seeks to check the wheels and tyres fitted to the car. Your spare tyre may or may not be tested. In situations where spare tyres and wheels have different construction from the regular ones, you may be given an advisory warning. A space saver wheel may contribute to the failure of your MOT test. The wheels and tyres on each axle must be of the same size. Usually, space saver wheels and tyres are smaller than the regular ones

The tests carried out during an MOT ensures that your vehicle meets the required road safety and environmental safety standards thus making your vehicle roadworthy. The MOT test is NOT a replacement for servicing your vehicle,  since it does not extend  to advanced mechanical servicing works.

Every vehicle driven on the road must have an MOT test by the third year of its registration. If it has been SORN, then it must be done the next year of its last MOT. It is mandatory to renew your MOT before its expiry date. This date can be seen on the existing MOT certificate. Renewing your MOT earlier(1 month) before expiry will give you up to 13 months MOT.

It takes us around  30 minutes to complete all tests.

At TOP TEST MOT centre we are  equipped to carry out  MOT on Class 4 vehicles including all cars, small vans, registered campervans which weigh 3 tons and other cars that weigh over 3 tons (provided the vehicle will fit on our ramps).

We can also MOT class 7 light commercial vehicles  (weighing up to 3.5 tons , long wheelbase vehicles and some larger pickups (like the Nissan Navara)Visit our centre at Reading with all classes of vehicles.

To ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy, the MOT test inspects road and environmental safety items such as your vehicle’s lights, brakes, suspension, structure, component security, tyres and emissions if they meet the test requirements. The law does not permit any MOT tester to remove any items or covers from the vehicle.

Beware,  the MOT test is an instantaneous test that does not guarantee the safety of the car but only its  working condition as at  the time the test is taken. These working conditions have been set by law as minimum requirements for every vehicle. Regular service should be the option if you want to ensure that your vehicle is mechanically sound. Servicing helps to discover potential faults that an MOT test can not reveal.

We do not take any documents to MOT your vehicle, your vehicle and its key are all that we need. In case of a failed test, we need the fail sheet (VT 30).

When your vehicle fails its initial test, we carry out a retest of the failed item within 10 days after the test. 10 days is the maximum period allowed by law. You can be charged a retest fee of up to 50% of the initial fee.

We will be glad if you follow the link for a list of checks you can or should carry out on your vehicle before an MOT test.
