What does MOT mean?

Along with a service, MOT tests are crucial things to remember when you own a car. You will almost certainly be breaching the law if you do not have one. But have you ever pondered what MOT means?

MOT stands for Ministry of Transport. Thus, “MOT test” means “Ministry of Transport Test”.

All vehicles plying the roads of the United Kingdom (UK) are mandated to take an MOT test if their cars or motorbikes are three (3) years or older to confirm their roadworthiness and general safety.

But, why do you need an MOT test?

Why do you need an MOT test?

We all need and want to be safe when we are driving or in a car on the road. Being safe on the road does not only rest on the driver’s ability to drive carefully and follow road signs, but it also depends on the condition of the vehicle; how safe it is to drive.

Keeping your car in good shape involves developing and upholding a good maintenance culture. Even though most drivers and riders know this, some of them do not properly take care of their vehicles to keep them in their safest driving conditions.

According to provisional estimates for 2021, “there were an estimated 1,390 reported road deaths in the year ending June 2021, a decrease of 11% compared to the year ending June 2020. There was a decrease of 22% compared to the 3 rolling year average of 2017 to 2019 (prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic)”.

These statistics are still very troubling.

However, the government knows this, and so it decided to take matters into its own hands. Thus, the MOT test was created to ensure that owners of various vehicles adhere to a maintenance culture that promotes efforts to keep the UK’s roads safe for all.

When do you take an MOT test?

The laws require that a vehicle undergo an MOT test by either the third anniversary of its registration or the anniversary of its last MOT if it is more than three years old.

Thus, driving your car without a valid MOT may result in a fine of up to £1,000.00.

What vehicles does an MOT test cover?

Cars, vans, trucks, and motorbikes of all shapes and sizes are required to undergo MOT tests to be legally accepted on the roads of the UK. Vehicles are categorised into classes for MOT tests. The table below shows the details of all vehicles tested per official guidelines

How to Prepare for an MOT Test

The best way to prepare for an MOT test is to get your car serviced by a professional mechanic at a DVSA approved service centre like Top Test MOT Reading. Regular servicing helps you to keep your car in good or great shape because faults and problems with the car can be found and fixed. This will also improve your chances of passing your MOT test.

However, there are some things you can also check yourself to prepare for an MOT test.

MOT Checklist for cars and vans

1.     Don’t take a dirty car to the MOT test centre. Make sure that you give both the exterior and interior a good cleaning.
2.     Ensure that your number plates are clean, visible and readable.
3.     Inspect your windscreen for cracks and chips, and check your wipers for any wear and tear. Replace any damaged parts before your test.
4.    Make sure that all lights inside and outside the car work properly. These include your headlamps, indicators, parking lights, and so on.
5.     Give your horn a good press and observe its function. If you’re in doubt that it’s working properly, visit your mechanic.
6.     It is very important to get your tyres checked. Tread depth must be within the legal limits as required by law. To check your tread depth, place a 20p coin in           the groves of the tyre. If the outer band is invisible, then your tyre’s tread depth is the legal minimum of 1.6mm. You may also use a tyre tread gauge. Don’t             forget to check your tyre pressure as well to verify that it is properly inflated.
7.      Check all fluid levels in the car and top them up or get them changed if the need be.
8.     Inspect your driving mirrors and make sure that no defects can be found on them.
9.      Compare the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your car’s body to that of your car’s V5C logbook; they should match.
